Every December we put up a poll covering the year. Best game, best surprise, biggest disappointment, the one that ran worst on launch day, and whatever else the year handed us. You vote. We do not tidy up the results, which is how a game almost nobody finished once took three categories.
Then we sit down for the annual awards podcast, read out the lot, and compare it with our own picks. It is meant to run an hour. It has never run an hour.
It is the last episode of the year, so there is usually some reflecting, some genuine praise, and at least one argument that has been building since March.
Voting twelve times for your own game of the year is not the spirit of it. It is also extremely obvious.
